Flaming June

03 June 2006

The beginning of June saw a continuation of the gusty winds of April and May however fortunately things did turn a little warmer. Those brave enough have had a few large fish from a gale bound Loch Watten but only if they braved the swell. The less valient sailors amongst us stuck in the sheltered bays and caught only small fry. However it was not all bad news as by mid June temperatures rose and insect hatches increased on all the lochs with olives and midge now prolific. Bags are now plentiful from Calder with some larger trout mixed in amongst the 1/2lbers. The Reay lochs and those further West have produced some good trout of 1lb plus given some light wind, cloud and warmth (difficult to get them all running together!!). With the mayfly about to start things as they say, can only get better!
