Buds of May

09 May 2007

May began with warm Spring weather and catches from Calder, Caorach and the Reay Lochs were reasonable. Most trout were in the 1/2lb to 3/4lb range with the odd specimen fish of 1.5lb. Principal feeding has been midge, beetle, snail, caddis and bloodworm. Unusually mayfly were spotted on 6th May at the Reay Lochs, one of the earliest sightings ever recorded by Lesley. The second week in May saw a return to cool showery weather with northerly winds. Insect hatches have dropped off a bit but there is still reasonable black gnat and midge. Lesley and boat partner Dave did the long walk up to the hill loch, Loch Shallag, and were rewarded with tremendous sport. Black flies and the Shallag Olive did the business with best trout coming in at 1lb 4oz. Watten has opened but given the cold winds Lesley has yet to venture out, won`t be long though!
