May on the river and lochs28 May 2008
May in Caithness was typically bright sun and east winds with very little rain to speak of. Lesley tried in vein for another salmon from the Forss River mid month however her efforts were to no avail as her week was beset with brilliant sunshine and no water. Loch fishing too has been something of a mixed bag. With Loch Watten opening on May 1st and the loch dotted with boats a few trout were taken. Lesley had two of a pound each on the Minstrel a favourite fly early in the month but as the brilliant sun and no rain took a hold catches fell generally everywhere. A few nice trout have come from the Reay lochs on floating line and Minstrel (again!) however anglers have really struggled on St Johns and Stemster, the latter eventually producing some of its lovely trout to Dave Martin Lesley`s boat partner on a Shallag Olive. Loch Calder which began poorly has picked up with warming temperatures and some good trout in the half to one pound class have been taken on dry fly as much as wet. With June looming large on the horizon the fishing will undoubtedly improve. Roll on the mayfly!
