June mixed bag

23 June 2008

Weather in Caithness is nothing if not unpredictable and the month began well enough with great bags coming from St Johns together with a Heilen monster trout of over 11LBs! The mayfly hatch took off and anglers were distinctly upbeat about the prospects. What do we know! - By mid month a succession of screaming gales muddied up the specimen waters and trout put their heads firmly down again. Watten only began to pick up by around 20th June after a poor May, not at all characteristic of this fine water. The Reay Lochs proved a saving grace with excellent trout of the pound plus coming off from early June, most falling to dry Yellow Mays fished on floating line around the weed bed areas. Roger and Sheila Dandridge had fantastic sport with trout well over the pound mark and Lesley has bagged a few herself of similar size. The estuary fishing for sea trout has picked up with some rain late in the month and some nice finnock have come off to local and visiting anglers.
