Anything goes for August03 September 2009
Caithness was hit with heavy rain showers throughout the month of August and consequently rivers went into spate and the lochs returned to winter levels. This was good news for all trout, sea trout and salmon anglers. Traditionally this month is a humid midge ridden affair best avoided apart from the necessary yet this year we had near perfect fishing conditions and this was reflected in great catches from Calder and Watten. Wet flies did a lot of damage with the B&P Spider and Kate McLaren doing justice to numerous browns. Calder had a good average weight for August with a lot of trout in the 3/4lb range taken in the margins. Watten surrendered good trout with averages around the pound mixed with fine 2 to 3lbers also being caught. Excellent seatrout (finnock) were frequently seen and caught on the Halladale estuary and numerous salmon came off all the local rivers. Flies either silver and black or black and orange did the business in singles and doubles. The Forss gave up a 20lb salmon which the angler returned after measurements were taken. This is the largest off the river for around 20 years. So it really has been August - anything goes!
