The effects of the extremely cold winter are still being felt with all the lochs brim full of icy water. Although there have been some good sized big trout caught on Calder and also St Johns (3lb and over) in general the fish remain very quiet. Insect hatches particularly small green/olive beetles have particularly plentiful on Calder but trout have been reluctant to come up for this bounty. The very cold water may have something to do with this along with air temperatures persistently hovering at around 8degreesC with the exception of a mini heatwave which occurred early on in April. The best is yet to come.
